GALVESTON -- Authorities are investigating a suspicious package that was found by a mailman at an apartment complex in Galveston.

Galveston police said a mailman was checking the outgoing mail at the Aston Place Apartments Monday afternoon when he found a suspicious package.

Officials said police were called and after investigating further, the regional bomb squad was called to take a look.

The bomb squad used a robot to remove the device. Galveston police said it did not appear to be anything sophisticated, but the package was sent off for analysis as investigators try to learn more.

A witness said the package looked like a cylinder wrapped in duct tape with what appeared to be a fuse sticking out of the top.

The immediate area near the intersection of 69th Street and Lasker Drive was evacuated and blocked by police while they were investigating. The scene was cleared around 8 p.m. Monday.
