GALVESTON, Texas -- Some pet owners on Galveston Island are calmer knowing that a coyote has been caught.

It was blamed for a number of dead animals, including Cornelius Mock’s cat.

“We have a lot of young children in the neighborhood and we were afraid for them to be out,” Mock said.

Some neighbors said they could actually hear the coyote howling at night.

To catch it, the Galveston Police Department’s Animal Control Bureau placed a trap in a park near West Dansby Drive. On Wednesday morning, they finally caught their coyote.

They now plan to test the animal and then euthanize it. Some residents wish it could have been released elsewhere, since it never attacked a human.

“I don’t think we should be killing everything that threatens us,” resident Claude Davidson said.

Davidson said he has seen more than one coyote in his neighborhood at a time. For now, the cage remains in place to try and lure in others.
