HOUSTON -- An injured horse ran down the northbound lanes of the Southwest Freeway Friday afternoon after it fell out of a moving trailer near the Wilcrest Road exit.

The driver of the trailer did not see that the horse had fallen out, or the resulting traffic jam, and kept driving, Stafford police said.

Police said another motorist pulled over and was able to grab the animal and secure it to a center divider on the freeway’s shoulder.

Air 11 video shows the horse suffered deep lacerations across his body and head.

After struggling to get the animal into another trailer, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Department took the horse to a Needville veterinarian. That's where they learned the horse’s injuries were not life-threatening.

“You would think that an animal falling out the back of a trailer at an excessive speed of 60 plus would have nothing but broken legs, but by some miracle this horse doesn’t,” said Deputy William Jenkins. “We ought to rename this horse to Lucky.”

Jenkins said the horse’s caretaker’s nephew was driving the trailer.

“He had no idea that the horse fell out until he got home to Acres Home, and realized he had no horse,” he said.

I am so happy to see that someone was able to help this horse. The unfortunate animal could have been more seriously injured or worse, killed. Thankfully people (drivers) were paying close attention to their surroundings. Thumbs Up! A Happy Ending.

Thank goodness the horse is safe and no one else was hurt when the horse fell out. He sure did not want to get back into another trailer!

How can you NOT FEEL you just lost a 1,000 pounds or more of weight from your "load"? This poor horse could have been fatally injured. Not to mention what if he had fallen on someone's vehicle or directly in front of them. That driver could have been killed. If these people have no more experience in dealing with horses, they should NOT have them. I'm glad no one was hurt and this beautiful horse wasn't killed. And thanks to the others that helped him. Though I don't agree the "owner" should have gotten the horse back. And pyramid, just GO AWAY with your heartless, useless comments! I truly feel sorry for your Pit Bull, if you really have one. Because they DON"T deserve to have an "owner" with your thought processes!

I agree with RAVEON --any animal deserves more respect from its owner--in the video it was clipping along prettty good but standing it was favoring the right rear--the driver must be on crack if he didn't notice the trailor bouncing a lot different--get your head out your a**

I'm very glad they took that horse to the vet. Poor thing - the way it's drawn up, and running so long on that ground, it'll definitely have been dehydrated and maybe problems with its hooves/legs. And yet again I agree with Raveon. I know that when I haul a horse in my trailer, or more than one, I can feel each horse. Even if they're a younger horse like this (and thus lighter) you'd feel if one made the kind of move they would when getting (or falling) out if you were at all paying attention. It's always up to the hauler to check ALL the latches, doors, make sure everything is secured thenselves before they drive off.

That horse does NOT want to get back in that trailer. He said, "I am NOT getting back in there! I AM NOT GETTIN BACK IN THERE !"

Has anyone noticed how under weight the horse is? Probably didn't know it fell out because he didn't care.

PYRAMID, YOU R HEARTLESS & AN IDIOT! Because you R OBVIOUSLY stupid, you need to keep your thoughts & comments to yourself. Dude, you R making yourself sound STUPID & HEARTLESS. RAVEON~~GOOD FOR YOU! I have spoken with the man who has this animal this afternoon. This horse is progressing well! WITH the owner's endorsement. When one is pulling a trailer with horses, cattle, etc. one cannot always be aware of what has happened. Thankfully, this horse survived and is is in good care. PYRAMID, I would just love to SMACK you in the face for your comments! You Are A Most HEARTLESS PERSON.
