BAYTOWN, Texas — The suspect who was shot and killed by a Baytown police officer Thursday was angry after he caught his wife cheating, then got into an argument with his girlfriend, police said.

Frederick Grayson went to the girlfriend's apartment after finding his wife with another man, according to investigators.

The girlfriend called 911 after Grayson fired multiple shots into her couch, then fled the scene.

"I heard her scream, then the loud noise and I went and told the manager to make sure she was OK," said Joshua Walter, a neighbor.

Officers spotted Grayson speeding in his tan Buick sedan around 11 a.m., but he refused to pull over.

At one point during a brief chase, Grayson put a gun to his head, according to Baytown police.

He came to a stop on Spur 330 near North Airhart Drive after crashing into a red and white Chevrolet Camaro.

Police said the suspect reclined in the driver’s seat, waiting for officers to approach so he could ambush them.

Suddenly, he lunged forward and opened fire.

"The suspect started firing his weapon through the driver’s side window at the officers," said Lt. Eric Freed with the Baytown Police Dept. "He then sat up and leaned out the driver’s side window, pointing the weapon at officers."

An officer returned fire, fatally striking Grayson.

Aerial views from Air 11 showed the suspect hanging upside down out of the driver’s side window of his car. A handgun was on the ground near the front of his vehicle.

No one else was hurt, including the driver of the Camaro.

The investigation into the shooting forced the closure of the northwest bound main lanes of TX-330 heading toward Interstate 10 for a few hours.

Walter said Grayson was at the girlfriend's apartment several times a day. He said he was acting weird Wednesday night.

"He seemed really messed up last night, like he was on something or either drunk, cause he was walking sideways like that," Walter said.
