HOUSTON – A smoke detector may have saved the lives of a northwest Houston family when their apartment went up in flames late Sunday night.

The couple was sleeping when their alarm woke them up around 11:30 p.m.

They ran out of their burning apartment and began to alert their neighbors at the Pineforest Park Apartments on Pinemont near Reno.

The flames spread quickly, but all of the residents made it out safely.

No injuries were reported.

Seven units were destroyed or damaged by the fire, smoke and water.

The couple who lives in the unit where the fire started told investigators a faulty heater might be to blame.

"They said that their heater had been giving them trouble during this cold spell," said Jay Evans with the Houston Fire Department.

Arson investigators will look at the heater and other possible causes.
