HOUSTON—Officials say two men tried crossing two busy streets on Thursday without using crosswalks. One of them is now dead and the other is in the hospital.
The first accident happened just before 8 a.m. at Collingsworth and Elysian streets, where witnesses say a Houston Independent School District bus hit a pedestrian trying to cross.
“He was coming to work, crossing the street,” witness Walter Kingsberry said. “Bus comes of out nowhere and hit him.”
There were three students on the bus. Though the victim is expected to recover, it did not look good.
“He had a rock embedded in his hand and he was bleeding,” Kingsberry said. “He was all scarred up.”
The other accident happened less than an hour later at Veterans Memorial Drive and West Gulf Bank Road. Witnesses said a man crossing the street was not where he was supposed to be.
Instead of using the intersection, he was spotted moving slowly with his cane about 75 to 100 feet from the corner. Traffic was so thick at the time that police say the driver of a van could not avoid hitting him.
“There was nowhere for him to go,” said Sgt. G.T. Hall, with the Houston Police Department. “There was a vehicle to his left.”
The victim died at the scene. Sgt. Hall said the driver was sober and was not speeding, and that he will not be charged.
Rain across the area was not blamed for either of the accidents, however officials at both scenes agreed it did not help.
