FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas -- Garrett Sebesta, 15, knows all about goats. He is exhibiting one at the Fort Bend County Fair that he hopes will win a ribbon.

Last June, Sebesta, a Needville High School sophomore, was on a church trip at Surfside Beach when a seven-foot shark attacked him.

“All I could do was just try to reach down there and pull him off and somehow my hand went in his mouth,” Sebesta said.

His hand was torn to shreds and his Achilles tendon was severed but he managed to get away.

He endured five surgeries. The physical and mental toughness and commitment required to raise animals for show, Sebesta said, helped him survive the shark attack.

He said he was “motivated to get up” even when he didn’t want to at 5 a.m.

“He did well. I'm very proud,” his mother Marina said.

By the way, Garrett wants to be a marine biologist when he grows up.

“I've always found sharks interesting,” Sebesta said.
