SOUTH HOUSTON, Texas -- A suspect was shot in the buttocks while trying to run away from police Tuesday afternoon.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said around 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, a sheriff’s narcotics officer and a South Houston police officer were conducting surveillance when they saw a man break into a black, Chevy truck and drive off from the South Houston High School parking lot.

The two officers followed the truck and chased the suspect in their vehicle.

Officials said the stolen truck crashed in the 2100 block of Parakeet Road in Houston.

Authorities said the suspect ran from the truck and then turned towards the officers while holding a “metallic object.”

Officials said the narcotics officer fired his gun at the suspect, fearing he had a weapon.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital. Police said he was shot in the buttocks. There’s no word on his condition.

The owner of the truck spoke with KHOU 11 News and said his son drove the vehicle to South Houston High School Tuesday morning. When he got out of class, the high school junior noticed that the truck was gone.
