HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- Harris County sheriff's deputies announced an arrest Thursday in the New Year's Day accident that left a pedestrian dead.
Erik Garza, 28, is charged with failing to stop and render aid.
The incident happened after 8 p.m. Wednesday on Woodforest Boulevard at Grassmont Street, north of I-10 East.
Deputies said the victim was crossing Woodforest with her son when the incident occurred. The son told deputies he made it across fine, but he turned around to see a pickup truck speeding up and hitting his mother.
The driver sped away and the mom died at the scene. Deputies said debris from the truck was left in the roadway, and a witness later found the vehicle’s license plate.
Garza told his mom what happened and she called the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Garza surrendered when deputies went to the house.
Officials have not released the name of the woman who died.
