HOUSTON – An officer responding to a chase in north Houston accidentally turned the wrong way in a construction zone, hitting a pickup truck head on, police said.

The crash happened early Friday morning on Fulton Street at Bennington Street.

According to the Houston Police Department, a patrol unit with two officers inside was responding to a Code 1 call with its lights on. The car turned north onto Fulton not realizing the street was one-way southbound due to construction.

The police car collided with an oncoming pickup truck. One police officer and the pickup driver were sent to the hospital in stable condition, said HPD. The second officer was sent to the hospital to be checked out but did not suffer any injuries.

HPD said a nearby chase caused a lot of police activity in the area just before 2 a.m.

An officer tried to pull over a car for a traffic violation on Airline Drive when the car took off. The suspect eventually wrecked in the construction area on Fulton. A 16-year-old passenger was let go, but the car’s 18-year-old driver was taken into custody. Police said he would be charged with felony evading and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
