HOUSTON -– Two men armed with a pistol and a shotgun held up a Denny’s in west Houston early Wednesday, assaulting a manager in the process, witnesses told KHOU 11 News.

The robbery was reported around 2 a.m. on Wilcrest near the Katy Freeway.

Witnesses said the men didn’t say much before robbing the cash register and then forcing a manger to a back room.

“’Put your hands up!’ so we put our hands up. That was the only thing they said,” customer John Royston told KHOU 11 News. “They told him to open the register. He opened the register. They weren’t happy with the money in there, so they said ‘the safe.’ He was explaining how much money they had – they didn’t have that much. They went to the safe, and they were in that room, and they were talking – only saying ‘give me the money.’ We heard that guy yelp, or holler, went they hit him.”

The men then ordered all the customers to get on the ground. One witness used his cell phone to call 911.

Four customers and a waitress were in the restaurant at the time, but no other injuries were reported.

“Just stunned, more than anything else. You’re just sitting there eating a meal and people come up with guns. It’s just kind of disconcerting.”

Royston said after the robbers left, he went to the back office to check on the manager. The man was bleeding from the head. He was then sent to the hospital by ambulance.

A waitress said the same restaurant was robbed only about six months ago.
