HOUSTON—Police late Wednesday investigated whether or not the shooting of a driver in southwest Houston was the result of road rage.
It was reported around 10 p.m. on S. Braeswood Boulevard near Atwell Drive, according to the Houston Police Department.
HPD said a man driving a Hyundai SUV was shot by someone driving a pickup truck. The shooter fired off several rounds before speeding away.
Nearby residents heard the whole thing.
"I heard rapid gunfire -- about five shots," said resident Wayne Barta. "It was just 'boom, boom, boom, boom!'"
The victim’s SUV veered off the road and into the grass along the bayou. Barta and other neighbors ran to assist him, but they didn't see the shooter.
"He said he had been shot," said Barta. "He was driving around, driving down the road, and got shot. He didn't know who did it."
The driver was sent to Memorial Hermann Hospital in serious but stable condition.
HPD said investigators were trying to determine a motive for the shooting. A suspect description was not available.
