HOUSTON – Officers responding to reports of a theft-in-progress found only a pile of copper outside of an old City of Houston building.

The theft was reported by a passerby around 10 p.m. Thursday at the city’s now abandoned Code Enforcement Building on Main Street at Francis Street.

When officers with the Houston Police Department arrived, they said they found the copper piled up outside.

Investigators said it appeared the suspects were scared off before police spotted them, so no suspect description was available.

Police said the suspects gained entry to the building by cutting through a chain link fence.
