HOUSTON -– The neighbors of a home that caught fire in far southwest Houston early Thursday said those responsible for the blaze were staying in the residence illegally.
The fire was reported shortly after 2 a.m. on Fall Briar Drive near W. Ridgecreek Drive, according to the Houston Fire Department.
Firefighters arrived to find the back of the home fully engulfed in heavy flames. The fire started to spread to a neighboring home, but firefighters were able to quickly put it out. No injuries were reported.
The home was a total loss except for the garage area, however.
Someone who lives nearby said the homeowners have been gone for several weeks, and whoever was staying at the home was doing so illegally. They believe the squatters somehow set fire the home before fleeing the scene.
