DALLAS - A Dallas woman found guilty of injury to a child in the death of her 10-year-old stepson was sentenced to 85 years in prison on Tuesday.
During her trial, Tina Marie Alberson admitted to denying her 10-year-old stepson water and forcing him to stand in one place during timeouts as a form of punishment. After a weekend of punishment in July of 2011, Jonathan James died from dehydration.
On Friday, jurors found Alberson guilty of reckless injury to a child.
"I will be able to forgive her in time," said Krista Bishop, Jonathan's mother. "I'm relieved, really, really relieved."
Alberson showed little emotion as the verdict was read.
"I don't pretend to know what's in her head," said prosecutor Marcie Curry. "I know it was probably something she saw coming."
Alberson will be eligible for parole after serving one-fourth of her 85-year sentence.
