HOUSTON—A 10-year-old boy was struck by a stray bullet that went through a wall and into a family’s apartment in southwest Houston overnight, neighbors said.
It happened at the Sunset Crossing Apartments near Beechnut Street and Wilcrest Drive around 12 a.m. Tuesday.
An unknown suspect or suspects fired into the front window of a unit behind the victim’s apartment. Three of the bullets pierced a wall and went into the unit behind the targeted apartment. One of those bullets struck Andy Arcate, 10, in the back.
“My mom flipped me over and she saw the blood on me. That’s when she saw the bullet shot on me and the wall,” he said.
“It was a miracle he survived,” said his mother, Patricia Valdez.
The bullet just missed his heart, she said.
“I was scared, angry. We called 911. To us it felt like it took a long time but they got here quick,” said Valdez.
“It was scary. It was the scariest sounds I’ve ever heard in my life,” said neighbor Erica Newsome.
A man who lived in the unit that was shot into was unharmed. Police said they have no suspects or known motive. They asked that witnesses contact them with descriptions of the gunman or gunmen.
“That’s why we have Huntsville prison,” neighbor Gwen Gonzalez said of whoever committed the crime. “They need to go away for a very long time.”
Valdez and some of her neighbors said they no longer feel safe at the complex and would like to move.
