Fort Worth police find 100 dead cats wrapped in foil inside refrigerators
Live animals also taken from home06:05 PM CST on Friday, November 7, 2008
FORT WORTH — Police have found hundreds of animals that they say endured cruel treatment at a home in east Fort Worth, authorities said.
About 100 dead cats were found wrapped in foil inside three refrigerators at a home in the 6100 block of Craig Street, police said.
Roughly 100 live cats and five dogs were also found inside the home, according to a police report. All of the surviving animals were taken to the city’s Animal Control shelter, and officials seized the bodies of the dead animals.
Officers were called to the home around 7:30 p.m. to assist the city’s Animal Control workers.
Officers said the living conditions at the home were extremely poor.
Evangeline Chambers, who lives at the house, said today in an interview outside of her home that she had at least 50 cats but would not confirm an exact number. Ms. Chambers said she rescued the animals and took good care of them.
“Everybody had a name,” Ms. Chambers said tearfully.
Describing the cats as family members, Ms. Chambers stressed that the bodies in the refrigerators were awaiting cremation. She said she was devastated by the loss of her animals.
