Texas Lice Squad busts myths, rids local kids and parents of head lice

MISSOURI CITY, Texas—Most kids are taught to share, but sharing isn’t a good thing when it comes to head lice.

No parent likes to think about it, but head lice are a big problem in the Houston area.

About one in four kids between the ages of 3 and 11 years old have lice.  What’s more, about one in four of the mothers of those kids also carries the critters.

That’s where the Texas Lice Squad comes in.

Penny Warner, a critical care nurse, tried everything to rid her family of lice.

She said she researched the problem and spent lots of money on over-the-counter remedies, but nothing seemed to work.

So Warner decided to take matters into her own hands and form the Texas Lice Squad.

The Texas Lice Squad, located in Missouri City, is one of just a handful of clinics of its kind in the country.

Warner said there are a number of common misconceptions about head lice that every parent should know.

For one, lice cannot jump.  They can’t live on couches or toys, and you can’t get rid of them by cleaning your house.

Also, lice cannot be killed by kerosene or hair dye.

The Texas Lice Squad has a trio of products they use to rid their clients of lice.

Those are the NitFree Terminator Comb, NitFree Mousse and NitFree Mint Spray.

Warner said if you or your child has lice and you come to the clinic, the average cost of treatment is $200-$300.

She said treatment time is determined by how much hair the person has and how severe the case is, but most treatments take between two and three hours to complete.
