GALVESTON, Texas -- There are 2,000 fewer kids enrolled in Galveston County schools than there were before Hurricane Ike.

Four of the 13 schools have yet to reopen after the hurricane, but some people are wondering if those schools will ever need to open at all.

Waylin Walker Wells is a second-grade student at Burnet Elementary, which is one of the schools that remains closed.  He said he doesn’t want his school to shut down for good.

"I will be sad forever," said Waylin.

But at a public meeting on Wednesday night, school administrators explained that they are facing a bill of $65 million, and there is a decrease in enrollment.  In fact, they said that enrollment is down by 25 percent.

The superintendent said she believes that keeping the schools closed for the moment is in the best interest of the district.

“This way we stay the way we currently are and wait until we get all the information in. Once we get the details, we'll come back to the table and start making the tough decisions about the future of our district,” said GISD Superintendent Lynne Cleveland.

But not everyone agrees with Cleveland. Some parents believe the consolidation of schools in the district has led to overcrowding.

"It is bordering on criminal how many students are in Weiss Middle School. It's unsafe," said one Galveston parent.

At this time, no decision has been made, but many parents and students would like to know whether they'll be heading back to their pre-Ike schools in the next school year.
