Body found in storage tank at Galveston wastewater plant

07:13 AM CST on Monday, January 5, 2009

By Scott Gonzales / The Daily News

GALVESTON — A city of Galveston employee was found dead at the city’s main wastewater treatment plant Sunday.

Andrew Hunter, 46, of Galveston was found in a storage tank at the facility at 5200 Harborside Drive and was confirmed dead at the scene, Galveston Police Lt. D.J. Alvarez said. The cause of death is under investigation, although initial reports indicate he likely drowned.

Hunter was repairing equipment around the storage tank when he fell almost 20 feet into the tank, Alvarez said. Investigators think he fell or was knocked from the tank’s elevated platform or catwalk, city spokeswoman Alicia Cahill said.

A call to Galveston police about a possible drowning was made at around 2:30 p.m. The incident appears to be an accident, but will undergo investigation, Alvarez said.
