Grandfather accused of leaving baby in Houston school yard
06:52 PM CST on Saturday, January 3, 2009
HOUSTON – A grandfather has been charged with child endangerment after he allegedly left his five-month-old grandson at an elementary school.
The five-month-old boy was found at Collins Elementary School in west Houston around noon on Friday by a delivery driver. The driver said he heard crying near a dumpster and found the baby in his stroller.
Police said 54-year-old Roy Garza was reportedly drinking beer while taking care of his two grandchildren.
According to HPD, Garza told them the baby's two-year-old sister ran off, and he went after her. Police said he was still intoxicated when they interviewed him and gave conflicting reasons for not returning for his grandson.
The baby, Alpha Diallo, was brought to the Texas Children’s Hospital and has since been taken to a temporary foster home.
The boy's mother had left her children under the care of Garza while she went to work. Her husband, who works the night shift, was at home sleeping.
