Lawyer suggests ex-Texan Jameel Cook's arrest due to racial profiling
07:31 AM CDT on Tuesday, August 26, 2008
HOUSTON -- The attorney for former Houston Texans fullback Jameel Cook questioned his client’s arrest on a marijuana possession charge and suggested the player might have been subjected to racial profiling.
Chip Lewis told Houston television station KRIV on Monday that Cook said the drugs weren’t his and he had no idea where they came from when he was arrested Wednesday during a traffic stop.
Cook, who played in all 16 games for the Texans last year, was waived by the team Monday.

“It raises the question of the fact that this may be a racial profiling situation, and I say this without knowing the deputy’s background,” Lewis said. “(Jameel) is a young African-American driving a very nice Mercedes-Benz around the Sugar Land area, a very nice neighborhood that he lives in. The deputy is Anglo.”
A jail employee would not comment to the The Associated Press on Monday night.
The 29-year-old Cook, now free on a $500 bond, was arrested on a misdeameanor charge after the deputy searched the car and found a plastic bag containing two grams of marijuana. Authorities said Cook had no valid Texas driver’s license and no proof of insurance.
“After talking to him that’s when I made the suggestion of calling the Fort Bend County D.A.’s office and I told them test the marijuana, the container, the baggies, anything for Jameel’s fingerprints,” Lewis said.
Lewis is awaiting the results of those tests. He also questions why the officer’s video camera in the patrol unit was not on during the traffic stop and search. Lewis said it was not turned on until after the deputy and Cook arrived at the police station.
Cook, who lives in the Houston suburb of Missouri City, was pulled over for no front license plate and expired registration. Lewis said Cook was not ticketed for those violations.
Cook joined the Texans in 2006 after five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who drafted him in 2001.
