One bad trip: Family rescued twice during Galveston vacation

01:07 PM CDT on Friday, August 22, 2008

By Sara Foley / The Daily News

GALVESTON — Their visit to the island has been one bad trip.

Plagued by a series of unfortunate events, members of the same East Texas family have in four days been rescued twice by local emergency responders.

The family, from Brookland near Jasper, got stuck at the Galveston-Bolivar Peninsula ferry landing when the operation unexpectedly shut down Sunday night; stuck in Galveston for a few days waiting on a hospital to release a newborn baby; and then stuck in midair, dangling from a bungee cord.

It started when Ashley Neyland, 18, went into labor while the family was stuck in line at the peninsula ferry landing Sunday night while the boats were idle during a terrorism scare.

A deckhand had noticed an unattended box, and the FBI was called to investigate. It turned out to be an ordinary toolbox. But in the meantime, Neyland had to be airlifted by a medical helicopter.

The two men were trapped inside the bungee cage, dangling in midair for half an hour.

Her mother, Debbie Hampshire; stepfather, Wesley Hampshire; and boyfriend, Daniel Ellis, drove to Galveston through Houston to meet her at the hospital.

Baby Daniel was born prematurely and with jaundice, so the family was stuck in a Galveston hotel while waiting for him to be released from the hospital.

They tried to enjoy some tourist attractions, but that didn’t go so well, either.

Wesley Hampshire persuaded Ellis to ride at Bungee Fun, 9030 Seawall Blvd.

The two men were trapped inside the bungee cage, dangling in midair for half an hour Wednesday night after an electronic malfunction kept them from coming back to the ground after their ride.

“He wanted me to go up there with him,” Debbie Hampshire said. “Thank you, Jesus, I didn’t. I wanted to see it operate first.”

The beach-front ride propels people strapped inside a cage that’s suspended by two bungee cables 130 feet into the air at 70 mph, according to Galveston.com. The riders free fall 100 feet, bounce several times and are then lowered back to the ground.

One of the cables seized as workers were trying to end the ride, keeping the men about 35 feet in the air.

Debbie Hampshire said she called 911 after 10 minutes passed and she overheard onlookers talk about another time people were trapped in the ride.

On July 26, two Canton women were trapped in the ride for 90 minutes until firefighters used a ladder truck to reach them.

Galveston firefighters came to the scene, but before they brought a ladder truck out so the men could climb down, the ride’s owner made a fix that got them to the ground, Battalion Chief David Whitton said.

Whitton said the owner shut down the ride Wednesday night and said he would have an electrician inspect it Thursday.

Wesley Hampshire said he was sore after the 30-minute midair suspension.

“I got strap marks all over me,” he said. “It looks like I’m bruised.”

Despite the hectic week, Hampshire said he’d come back to Galveston.

“I’ll come here,” he said. “But I’ll damn sure not ride that ride again.”
