Family, friends gather to say goodbye killed couple
06:44 PM CST on Tuesday, December 30, 2008
HOUSTON -- In a funeral chapel on the Katy Freeway, people gathered to say goodbye to Kevin and Christie Bordelon.
The couple had been married for seven years. They were together in life, and now in death.
A report from the early responder at the accident scene reported to the families that Kevin and Christie were holding hands when they died.
They died in the early morning hours on the day after Christmas. Christie, 30, had just picked up her husband to bring him home safely from a bar. On their way home, their vehicle was broadsided by a pickup truck that had blasted through a red light on Highway 6.
The woman behind the wheel of the truck is currently hospitalized at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Authorities say her blood alcohol content at the time of the crash was 0.269.
Aside from the death of two loved ones, those who gathered at the chapel were forced to confront another reality: 45 percent of auto fatalities in the state are drug or alcohol related.
When the woman believed to be responsible for the accident recovers, police say she faces two counts of intoxicated vehicular manslaughter.
The courts may not be as forgiving as the families of the victims.
“As a society, as a state and as a people, we have to figure out that it's not okay to leave this many people effected by one simple decision,” said Ron Harris, victim’s father.
The victims’ families have also set up a memorial fund for Kevin and Christie at Community National Bank. The proceeds will go to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (M.A.D.D).
