DALLAS — Dallas police officials Monday reiterated that their investigation into last week’s deadly highway shootings still points to former Utah highway patrolman Brian Smith as the only gunman.

Dallas authorities are still waiting on final ballistics tests to link three Dec. 22 shootings in Dallas to the gun Smith later used to shoot himself.

Ballistics tests on the bullets should be finished within the next several days, said Dallas police Lt. Craig Miller. Even if the results are inconclusive, Miller said, other evidence still points to Smith as the shooter. He declined to describe that evidence.

Garland police said today they are also still waiting on further testing before connecting Smith to the death of Jorge Lopez, who was shot in his car in Garland.

Investigators have already used preliminary tests to connect Smith to the fatal shooting of truck driver William Scott Miller, who was killed while driving on Interstate 635 in Dallas about 10 minutes after Lopez was killed.

"Nothing in my mind has changed from last week," Miller said during Monday's news conference. "We still believe he is responsible for the death of William Miller."

Two other people escaped serious injuries in separate shootings along westbound LBJ between Jupiter Road and Forest Lane.

Smith shot himself in Garland hours after the freeway shootings. He died on Christmas Eve after being taken off of life support.

Investigators are still trying to determine what prompted the shooting spree.

"That’s one of the things we are trying to figure out right now," Miller said.
