Police said the truck was driven by the victim's father.

He was leaving home in the 2100 block of Delery to go to work when it happened.

Police said neither parent realized the toddler had ventured outside.

"The girl was in front of the truck when the father pulled away and apparently the truck or trailer ran over her," said Houston Police Department Sgt. G.T. Hall. "The father was not aware of it at the time and drove on to the job site."

Police sent investigators to the scene, but they believe it was simply a terrible accident.

A neighbor saw the two-year-old running into the street and tried to yell at the father, but he didn't hear her and continued on to work.

The toddler's mother tried to perform CPR, but it was too late. The little girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The mother was inside with the victim's twin and another child when the accident happened.

She called her husband at work to break the news.

"She called him and said the child had been run over and at the time, he wasn't even aware that he was the one who had done it," Hall said. "He came back to the scene thinking that somebody else had run over the child."

Police believe it was just a terrible accident and don't expect charges to be filed in the case.
