Annual HEB Holiday parade becomes a family tradition
03:55 PM CST on Thursday, November 27, 2008
HOUSTON – On Thanksgiving morning, many gathered to watch the 59th Annual HEB Holiday parade. But as the bands passed by, one family said that they had seen every march and every step since 1968.
"We've been renting trucks for a number of years now. This is the 40th year that we've been out to the parade," said Fidencio Ruiz, parade spectator.
The Ruiz family parks their trailer at the same spot every year at 6 a.m.
"We haven't missed one since we've been in Houston," said Ruiz.
The only thing that changes is that every year, the trailer and the family gets a little larger.
"All these are my grandchildren. Then there's my daughters, and nieces and nephews," said Ruiz.
In fact, 17-year-old Ryan Richard has never known a Thanksgiving without the parade.
"I love it. I'm 17 and I've been here for the last 17 years," said Richard.
Once the parade is over, the Ruiz family keeps up another tradition.
"We all go home, get dressed and come back to one of our houses for dinner," said Richard.
Of course, they all know that next year both the parade and Fidencio's trailer will be back to carry on the tradition for another year.
