Police union may sue Donald Driver’s father
08:30 PM CST on Wednesday, November 26, 2008
HOUSTON – The president of the Houston Police Officer's Union said that he will ask his board of directors to devote all of the resources necessary to pursue civil, and even criminal, cases against the father of NFL player Donald Driver and Quannel X.
The union claims that the allegations the two have made about the Houston police officers involved in the situation are untrue.
“I feel very strongly about that investigation. I think they'll make the right decision. The pain and suffering my family and I have gone through cannot be excluded,” said Marvin Driver, Jr.
But this is still under debate as the case is currently being disputed by the police officer's union.
“The officers involved are torn apart by the false allegations that have been made against them,” said Gary Blankenship, president of the Houston Police Officer’s Union. “It's time somebody stood up and held these people accountable for making false allegations in public.”
Quannel X disagrees and continues to stand beside Marvin Driver, Jr.
“Many have complained about these particular officers,” said Quannel X. “The facts will find that Mr. Driver went through something he should not have been put through, and his civil rights were violated.”
Police claim that Driver was arrested during a routine stop because of outstanding traffic warrants. They said that when they arrived at the southeast jail, Driver was unresponsive and had to be transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Driver claimed he was unresponsive because he'd been beaten so badly.
“We intend to pursue the case civilly and criminally. If they signed sworn statements, we're going to insist the DA's officer pursue criminal charges. If these people have not signed sworn statements, but have made public allegations defaming these officers, we're going after them civilly,” said Blankenship.
HDP’s Internal Affairs Division plans to work through the holiday to examine Driver's medical records. They said they will interview the officers on Friday.
Driver said he won't have further comment until that investigation is complete and its findings made public.
