9-year-old Texas boy outsmarts burglars
08:32 AM CST on Wednesday, November 26, 2008
FORT WORTH - A fourth grader home for the holiday in Fort Worth almost found himself face-to-face with a couple of burglars.
While 9-year-old Jovanny was home alone watching TV, he heard a noise.
"At first it was soft like [tap, tap]," he said. "Then it got harder and harder."
Jovanny shut himself in his parents' bedroom and called 911.
"Who's at your house? " said the operator.
"I don't know. He's like a robber," said the boy. "I'm scared."
"What do you hear?" asked the operator.
"Something breaking, like breaking noises," said the boy.
"I'm a kid. I'm a little, I'm a kid," he added.
It's a little like the movie Home Alone.
Only it was real and really scary.
But Jovanny kept his cool.
"The most scariest thing was when I heard something falling. I got really scared but I didn't panic. I didn't scream and go 'ahhh.' I didn't scream much," he said.
He didn't scream, even when the bedroom doorknob turned.
He had locked it.
Police arrived in less than five minutes.
Officers caught one man inside the house and another who ran out the back door.
Jovanny says they were trying to take his TV.
Records show both suspects have rap sheets.
Antonio Perez, 22, already has served two years for burglary and was out on bond for another break-in.
Gary Deleon, 18, has one arrest related to car theft.
