Ike debris still clutters the streets of San Leon

SAN LEON, Texas -- In the two months since Hurricane Ike blew in, little has changed in the Galveston County town of San Leon.

Huge piles of debris sit untouched almost everywhere you look.

"If we can't get any help to clean this up, you come back next year it will be sitting here just like this," said Scott Lyon, San Leon honorary mayor and assistant fire chief.

That's what worries residents.

Before November, the federal government had picked up the whole tab for debris removal. But now, that's changed.

"The county is having to finance partial amounts until or unless FEMA agrees to fund the 100%," said Garret Foskit with the Galveston County Nuisance Abatement. "Right now, the county is funding 25% of the debris cost pick up."

And only now is the county government getting around to picking up debris in less populated areas.

And it's an expensive prospect for the coastal county that has yet to see any federal dollars.

"There was an initial burst of federal funding, but the 100 percent reimbursement for debris removal didn't last long enough to finish the job," said Governor Rick Perry.

Residents of San Leon are up against a tight deadline. They have until Dec. 1 to push all of their debris to the county right-of-way. After that time, residents will be responsible for their own debris removal.

A federal program will allow some people to apply for debris removal after the deadline at little to no cost.

But what FEMA doesn't cover, will fall entirely to the county.

"I am sure it will have a financial impact -- especially if the county has to pay out millions for debris clean-up," said Foskit.

And what Galveston County can't pick up, residents will keep seeing on their streets -- everywhere they look.
