HOUSTON— The Houston Police Department confirms two officers accused of beating an NFL player's father have been taken off the streets.

Gilbert Cruz and Bacillo Guzman have been reassigned to desk duty pending the outcome of the investigation into the alleged beating of Marvin Driver.

HPD Chief Harold Hurtt made the decision after reading a preliminary internal affairs report.

"We take allegations such as these very seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and be transparent in our findings, whatever the conclusion,” Hurtt said in a written statement Friday.

Donald Driver spoke publicly about his father for the first time since he was hospitalized.

Investigators from HPD’S internal affairs division spent hours interviewing Marvin Driver in his hospital room on Thursday.

Driver, the father of NFL star Donald Driver, was arrested on outstanding traffic warrants early Monday morning.

He later told relatives that HPD officers beat him and forced something down his throat before taking him to jail.

Driver was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition.

He was on a ventilator and couldn't speak until Thursday. He told relatives what happened by writing on paper towels.

Driver's condition was upgraded to good on Thursday.

Donald Driver, a receiver for the Green Bay Packers, spoke publicly Friday for the first time since his father was hospitalized. He rejoined the team in Wisconsin Friday after spending some time with his father in Houston.

“I think the biggest thing is that I just wanted to see my dad, plain and simple -- just to make sure he was OK," Driver said Friday after returning to Wisconsin. "... When I got down there he was doin’ fine... he’s one of those guys that’s a tough cookie so the biggest thing is he’s happy right now. He had a smile on his face when I left, so he told me to get back to work so I had to go back to work."

Marvin Driver had to communicate by writing on paper towels.

According to other family members, doctors told them Marvin Driver's injuries were caused by blunt force trauma.

They were happy to hear that Cruz and Guzman are off the streets -- now they want them off the force.

“We only don’t want their jobs, we want criminal charges against them. We does -- because my brother was hurt really bad," said Mary Driver, Marvin's sister.

Family members also say a third officer is backing up Marvin Driver's story. HPD hasn't confirmed that.

Driver is expected to be released from the hospital soon.
