Injured NFL player's dad questioned by HPD
08:51 PM CST on Thursday, November 20, 2008
HOUSTON—Investigators from HPD’S internal affairs division reportedly spent most of the day interviewing Marvin Driver in his hospital room Thursday.
Driver, the father of NFL star Donald Driver, was arrested on outstanding traffic warrants early Monday morning.
He later told relatives that HPD officers beat him and forced something down his throat before taking him to jail.
Driver was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition.
He was on a ventilator and couldn't speak until Thursday. He told relatives what happened by writing on paper towels.
On Thursday, doctors upgraded Marvin Driver’s condition to good and moved him out of ICU into his own room.
Chief Harold Hurtt told 11 News that he is waiting on a preliminary report that is not yet complete.
He said that he expects to have that report late Thursday night or early Friday.
“Our intention is to be very transparent. We do want to maintain the integrity of the Houston Police Department, not only in the community but in the criminal justice system,” said Hurtt.
The two officers at the center of the investigation are still on duty, said Hurtt.
The chief said that they’ll stay on duty until the investigation is complete.
The Driver family believes the officers should be taken off the streets.
“Maybe they are, maybe they are not. But until we investigate, we won’t know,” said one of Driver’s family members.
