KATY -- You didn't need a megaphone to hear what happened to seven former Katy ISD cheerleaders Wednesday. Word spread fast at Morton Ranch High School as students learned the ex-cheerleaders were indicted for a hazing incident involving the junior varsity squad.

The misdemeanor charges state the defendants engaged in reckless conduct that endangered the mental and physical health and safety of the junior varsity cheerleaders.

Laura De La Cruz was the JV cheerleader who blew the whistle on the varsity squad.

She said it started when the older cheerleaders picked her and the other girls up at their homes last summer.

"I was blindfolded and my hands were bound together," De La Cruz said.

What happened next was nothing to cheer about.

Laura De La Cruz said she spoke out about the hazing "for the right reasons."

"It was just a big blur. I just remember hitting the water. That's about it," De La Cruz said. "I just stayed quiet the whole time. I thought if I was quiet, I wouldn't get it as bad as anyone else."

The sophomore cheerleader was one of eleven Morton Ranch squad members who said they were hazed.

'They're laughing, just saying really rude language to us," she remembered. "And they just thought it was funny. They were laughing and being really rude."

One of the seven indicted Wednesday was school mascot Ady Garner.

"She's a really sweet girl," said Robert Fickman, Garner's attorney. "She would never harm anybody."

Fickman said Garner is surprised by the nature of the allegations.

"She never had any intention for anyone to be harmed," he said. "And she regrets the fact that the JV girls, apparently, some of them felt some degree of discomfort."

More charges could be in the works for the juvenile members of the varsity squad.

"I just don't believe this rises to the level of criminal intent," said Tucker Graves, an attorney representing one of the 16-year-olds.

"I feel like they will press charges for the simple fact they have the same evidence the DA had and the grand jury had," Graves said.

If convicted of the charges against them, the seven former cheerleaders could face up to six months in prison and a $2,000 fine.
