Looting continues in Galveston two months after Hurricane Ike

GALVESTON -- When the people who lived along the Gulf Coast were ordered to evacuate before Hurricane Ike, Galveston police and other law enforcement agencies on the island knew they would have their hands full with looters.

Within hours of the evacuation, police had already picked up and charged a few suspects.

According to police, one of the most bizarre incidents was a man who they believe drove all the way from San Antonio to Jamaica Beach to allegedly steal from the hurricane evacuation zone.

Jamaica Beach police said that the suspect, Terry Lynn Bagley, is still in the Galveston County jail. He is held on a $250,000 bond.

Bagley was caught wearing a fake CenterPoint Energy uniform. He was reportedly stealing transformers.

In his truck, Bagley carried disguises that could help him pose as a telephone employee and a construction worker.

Bagley's arrest came just two days after Ike. But two months later, Galveston police said that looting is still a problem. Many residents have not returned to the island, and some people are apparently taking advantage of the situation.

In fact, Lee Goins, Wayne Jones, Deshorn Martin, and Deandre Holmes were recently charged with multiple counts of looting.

They allegedly broke into at least 28 Galveston homes. But police said they weren’t the only looters on the island.

To date, 17 people have been charged with looting in Galveston since the hurricane.
