HOUSTON -- Two months after Hurricane Ike, Demetrio Aguillon is still cleaning up his Cashmere Gardens home.

"I had five or six inches of water on the finished floor," said Demetrio Aguillon, homeowner. "To get everything fixed, it cost about $6,000."

But flood damage doesn’t just happen when a hurricane rolls into town.  For residents living adjacent to the most narrow part of Hunting Bayou channel, it’s a familiar routine.

"Sometimes it floods so that there’s only 8 to 10 inches of water, but that's enough to mess up the furniture and change everybody's life," said William White, homeowner.

The good news is that eventually, Project Hunting could change their lives, too.

The Harris County Flood Control District recently began excavating a 75-acre detention basin, with plans to widen and deepen a three mile stretch of the channel.

But it will be several years before any work is done along this part of the channel, and homeowners are ready to get out now.

"When residents found out we were doing this project, and that we will need to acquire right-of-way, many stepped forward and asked if we could purchase their homes now as opposed to later," said Heather Saucier from Harris County Flood Control.

With the slow economy, the opportunity to get fair market value and relocation assistance is too good to pass up for some homeowners living in Hunting Bayou.

"I think it's a good time to get out, especially when you know what's coming," said White.
