HOUSTON -- Term limits mean that Bill White can't run again for mayor. So while he's deciding his political future, the race to replace him is on.

The only candidate officially running at the moment is Council Member Peter Brown.

"I am definitely running for Mayor. I'm very excited about it. We're going to continue the good government policies of Mayor Bill White," said Brown.

Speculation originally centered around three names: Peter Brown, former Kemah Mayor Bill King, and City Controller Annise Parker.

On Monday, Annise Parker's spokesperson said that "she's working to put together a campaign, but not ready to make an announcement."

Political insiders said it appears Bill King may no longer run.

"I have not made a decision yet. I would like to gauge who else is in, and look at what the city is going to be facing. I think we're in for some tough sledding," said King.

But there are two other possible candidates: former City Attorney Gene Locke and former Governor Mark White.

White said people are asking him to run, and he's thinking about it.

But experts have said Locke could be a strong contender. However, he has not confirmed whether he is up for the challenge.

"What we don't have is a center or right of center candidate.  Some thought Bill King might be that candidate,” said Bob Stein, 11 News political expert.

Stein said that we have yet to hear from other possible candidates.
