House fire may have started in attic

HOUSTON – Two men living in a home in Mission Bend has a long cold night ahead of them after their house caught on fire on Saturday evening.
“The residents said they noticed some haze in the living room area of the home,” said Steve Fowler of the Community Volunteer Fire Department.
According to reports, the men checked the kitchen and other rooms in the house for the fire and didn’t see anything. It was then that they noticed the flames inside a vent.
“They noticed the fire was showing through a vent up in the attic,” said Fowler.
But the time the fire department arrived, heavy smoke was coming out of the one-story home. The team eventually extinguished the blaze, but not before the house had sustained heavy fire damage throughout.
The Harris County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, but it is possible that it may have been caused by the heating system in the home.
“The fire marshal will decided the cause of the fire, but if it is related to the furnace, it underscores the value of having a central heating system professional do a home inspection at the change of seasons,” said Fowler.
Fowler said that regular inspections could help prevents fires, as well as carbon monoxide leaks.
