Police: Drug dogs found pot in Worthing High teacher's car
09:36 PM CST on Thursday, November 13, 2008
HOUSTON—An HISD teacher was escorted from campus in handcuffs Thursday after drug dogs allegedly found pot in his car.
It happened at Worthing High School in southeast Houston.
Sean Thomas was suspended pending the outcome of the investigation and was being reassigned, officials said.
Police said while the drug dogs were searching, they noticed a ninth grader acting nervous.
Officers searched his backpack and found an unloaded handgun.
The student was arrested and processed for expulsion. Administrators said he would be sent to an alternative school.
The principal explained the arrests in a phone call to parents.
“Please be assured that the safety of your children is our number on priority, and I am committed to maintaining a safe and drug-free environment,” the principal said in the call.
The commotion had many students talking.
“One dude, he got caught with a weapon. The other one, he got caught with drugs in the car,” one student said.
“That’s his business. He was doing the wrong thing,” another student said.
But the incident at Worthing wasn’t the first time someone has been caught doing the wrong thing on campus.
A teacher at Whittier Elementary was allegedly caught smoking pot behind the school, and a teacher at Wheatley High was arrested after police searched that campus with drug dogs.
Last month, two Montgomery County elementary teachers were arrested on drug charges, one of whom was charged with allegedly trafficking marijuana and cocaine.
So why all the teacher trouble?
HISD said teachers are not drug tested, but publicity has led to more tips being phoned in.
Those tips lead to the drug dog searches, and sometimes, those searches end in arrests.
