Game show winner gives cash to food bank
12:40 PM CST on Wednesday, November 12, 2008
HOUSTON—Houstonian Louise Hauser, food pantry supervisor at West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) appeared on “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire,” and she’s sharing some of her winnings with the Houston Food Bank.
Hauser is donating $10,000 of her $50,000 prize winnings.
“My husband Nick and I have a very simple life and we don’t require much in the way of ‘stuff’ to be happy,” says Hauser.
“I’m very blessed. (I had a) loving upbringing, dear husband, strong faith, good job. I grew up in a three-generation family of 11 people and my parents and grandparents taught us by example about sharing what we have with others in need,” she said.
Hauser’s donation comes even though her home sustained significant damage during Hurricane Ike.
She also plans to give prize money to her church and to WHAM, which is a member agency of the Houston Food Bank. WHAM is a human services organization that provides a “door of hope” for needy children, families and homeless individuals in West Houston.
WHAM meets the basic human needs, including food, clothing, household items, financial aid, transportation and job search assistance.
Each week more than 80,000 people eat because of The Houston Food Bank.
