Houstonians prepare to observe 'Day of the Dead,' or 'Dia de los Muertos'
09:25 AM CDT on Friday, October 31, 2008
Saturday and Sunday mark a special celebration in the Hispanic community.
It’s called Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
The Mexican celebration occurs on November 1 ( All Saints’ Day) and November 2 ( All Souls’ Day).
The holiday features altars dedicated to deceased loved ones.
They include photographs and other memorabilia.
The personal displays often have a healing effect on loved ones left behind.

Day of the dead celebration in Acteal, Chiapas, Mexico.
“It’s a celebration of life,” said Macario Ramirez, who owns Casa Ramirez.
Every year, his Heights show features more than a dozen altars.
“We welcome the spirits of our ancestors on November first and second,” said Ramirez.
Children are honored November 1 and adults November 2.
“We feel the heavens open and they come down and visit us,” said Ramirez. “It’s not all somber. We can still cry about them not being with us, but it’s mostly happiness. We remember them and we can even play music and dance if we wish.”
Altars are decorated with the deceased person’s picture and favorite items, drinks and food.
One popular food is pan de muertos (dead bread). It is a traditional bread for the dead that is placed on the altar to offer nourishment for the departed soul.
Sugar-made skulls, or calaveras de azucar, incense, flowers and candles also adorn the altars.
The candles are said to light the way for the souls.
While many will opt to create altars, others will serenade loved ones at the cemetery during these two days.
They'll also bring flowers, food and prayers.
You can see several altars at Casa Ramirez in the Heights.
Dia de los Muertos is an ancient celebration originated by the Aztecs in Mexico.
