ALTAIR, Texas -- In the Rice High School library Wednesday night, heated arguments surrounded the photographs that depicted a respected teacher posing with people in blackface at a costume party.

It was a private party held off of school grounds.

“You don't understand. You don't understand how I feel. You don't understand why I am angry. It really does hurt me. It hurts me because that was my first grade teacher,” said one of the attendees.

More than a hundred people showed up at the meeting in Altair. Most of them were infuriated that the teacher had not been removed from the school.

The district's superintendent assured parents and students that the teacher had been disciplined.

While the teacher seen in the pictures was not present at the meeting, she is apparently working on a written apology. But that's not enough for community activist Quanell X.

"Listen to me good. Do not allow any African-American children to go into that lady’s class until she apologizes," said Quanell X.

The activist abruptly said he was leaving the meeting and took the crowd along with him.

“This meeting is a dog and pony show. I'm out of here. It's time to leave this thing," said Quanell X.

One of the reasons people were so upset at the meeting was because the superintendent could not discuss the punishment the teacher is facing.

But he did say the teacher is sorry for what happened, and he is, too.

Meanwhile, Quanell X is asking concerned parents to call the State Board of Education.
