LOS ANGELES- A Halloween-themed display featuring an effigy of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin hanging by the neck from a noose has generated a number of complaints in Hollywood.
The display also shows an effigy of Republican presidential candidate, Senator John McCain, popping out of a chimney surrounded by fake flames.
One of the creators of the display, Chad Michael Morissette, insisted the installation was part of the household’s yearly ritual to mark Halloween.
Morissette admitted it was “spooky and dark” but maintained it was just a seasonal decoration.
He said it was a bit of a novelty for drivers and bus passengers. who have been stopping to snap pictures of the macabre scene.
Morissette said he only heard about his neighbors' concerns after callers complained that the display amounted to a hate crime.
“It is OK, and only OK, because it is Halloween and we decorated our entire house in a spooky manner, we do it every holiday,” he added.
A Los Angeles County Sheriff said they don't think the display it constituted a hate crime.
Morisette’s partner and co-designer, Mito Kwan, defended the artwork because he said they were “not promoting obviously lynching somebody, obviously that’s not what we’re promoting at all.”
