Fisherman swept into Gulf off East Beach
07:48 AM CDT on Thursday, October 16, 2008
GALVESTON — Waves crashing on an East Beach jetty apparently knocked a fisherman into the water Wednesday. Two men, including one relative, attempted to rescue him, a beach patrol official said.
Peter Davis, chief of the Galveston Beach Patrol, said the fisherman went into the water about 150 yards from shore on the east side of the East Beach jetty.
The fisherman, who is from Montgomery County, was submerged for five to 10 minutes, Davis said. The man’s condition wasn’t immediately known, Davis said. His name was withheld pending notification of family.
“The tide was coming up, and I guess he was washed off by a wave,” Davis said. “A relative and another guy looked for him, and a guy from shore called 911.”
Two Beach Patrol lifeguards, Loree Pryor and Danielle McClellan, rushed to the scene.
“They ran out with a paddle board, and the relative found him as they arrived,” Davis said. “They put him on the board and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation.”
The area where the fisherman entered the water is shallow, except right next to the jetty, Davis said.
“The deeper part next to the rock is probably over your head,” Davis said. “It’s almost never where you can stand up next to the rocks.”
An ambulance crew took the fisherman to the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he might have been flown to a Houston hospital. The fisherman’s relative received precautionary treatment and suffered no life-threatening injury, Davis said.
