HOUSTON -- As her children play, Joyce Washington worries about where she’s going to live.  She has photos of what Hurricane Ike did to her house in northwest Houston, but even though her home is damaged, she said she was turned down for FEMA assistance.

Houston’s Red Cross shelter has become home for her and her three children.  But now, the shelter is closing.

"There are still a lot of people in the shelter that will to be turned out into the streets," said Washington, shelter resident.

The building Washington is living in, has been a shelter since Ike hit. At one point, they had over a thousand people staying there.  The number is now down to just under 300.

Like Washington, Kevin and Gloria Bradford of LaPorte also have no place to go.

"I feel like we really didn't get enough notice. Two weeks notice would have been better, and given us more time. We've been turned down at every apartment we've applied for," said Gloria Bradford.

The Red Cross and other agencies said they will make sure everyone finds a new place to stay.

"We really do feel that by Sunday we will have the residents placed in transitional housing, and made other resources available to them," said Denise Bishop of the Houston Red Cross.

This is the goal, as the shelter gets ready to close its doors.
