HOUSTON -- They may speak in bite-sized chunks, but when it comes to McCain and Obama, their platforms are now focusing on the economy.

McCain is proposing that government-backed FHA loans should be available to those who can prove their credit worthiness when they apply for their loans. The new loans would be for the current value of the home, erasing any negative equity.

Obama also offers mortgage restructuring, but wants the Housing and Urban Development group to coordinate working with current lenders. He wants a 90-day foreclosure moratorium and $25 billion to aid states and cities in order to avoid property tax increases.  He would also change the bankruptcy code to allow judges to re-work primary home loans.

On 401K investments, McCain proposes a temporary freeze on mandatory 401K withdrawals after the age of 70, and would have them waived for one year. His reasoning is that the withdrawals require people to sell low and lose funds.

Obama includes that same senior provision, but also proposes penalty free withdrawals from 401K plans this year and next.  The withdrawals are limited to 15 percent of the total investment and are capped at $10,000 without tax penalty.

On taxes, McCain would keep the top tax rate at 35 percent and maintain 15 percent on capital gains. But he would phase out the Alternative Minimum Tax, cut the corporate tax rate from 35 to 25 percent, and add corporate tax credits for equipment and research development.

Barack Obama and John McCain debate in Nashville.

Obama said he would provide a zero capital gains rate for small businesses. He promises not to increase taxes to anyone making less than $250,000 a year. He also wants to provide at least $500 per person ($1000 per family) in tax credits for those who make under $250,000.

As of Monday night, a new poll shows McCain is picking up support in Texas, but not so much nationally.
