HOUSTON – An elderly couple lost their North Houston home after it reportedly caught fire during a power surge.

According to the report, a power line located outside of Harvey and Minnie Moye’s home was damaged during the hurricane on September 13.  At the time, the Moyes and their family members called CenterPoint on numerous occasions to come out and fix the line.

Five days later, power was restored to the Moyes’ home. But the Moyes said they noticed the power was surging, and again called CenterPoint to fix the problem.

Their attorney, Robert Luke, said that even though the couple had called and were concerned about the problem, CenterPoint failed to show up.  Then on September 20, the couple’s home caught on fire.

The fire was so intense, that the elderly couple was overcome by smoke and unable to escape.  Firefighters found them lying on the floor in their home.

Minnie Moye was taken to hospital, where she is still recovering from burns and smoke inhalation. Harvey Moye was also taken to hospital, but is now living in an assisted living facility.

The fire was originally thought to be caused by burning candles, but the couple’s attorney said investigators have now ruled that it was caused by a power surge, possibly through one of the appliances.

The Moyes have decided to sue CenterPoint for failing to address the problem and warning them of the possible dangers.
