Volunteers save a San Leon man's home
09:57 AM CDT on Monday, October 13, 2008
SAN LEON, Texas -- Residents in San Leon have begun repairing and rebuilding their homes. But for many elderly residents, such as Barney Garza, this is a feat that is proving to be tough financially and physically.
Garza has survived his share of storms, but he’s struggling to stay afloat after Ike.
"I survived World War II. It was pretty tough at times, but this is almost as bad," said Garza.
As a younger man, Garza helped storm the beaches of Normandy with General Patton's 3rd Army, but at 87 years old, overcoming Ike is proving to be difficult.
"I had about three to four feet of water in my place. It was a real mess," said Garza.
It was a mess that he needed help cleaning up.
"As quickly as I could, I filed with FEMA. I haven't heard from them yet," said Garza.
FEMA has processed over 700,000 claims since Hurricane Ike hit Texas four weeks ago. But Garza's home is like many homes on San Leon and is waiting for assistance. For now, it's volunteer groups, like Steve's Organized Bunch, that are making the difference until FEMA arrives.
"If you wait for FEMA, these people will die. This man is destitute. His house is in shambles and FEMA hasn't shown up," said Steve Hoyland.
Steve and his organized bunch began repairing Garza's home from top to bottom.
"I've never seen people that could accomplish so much in so little time," said Garza.
Barney has weathered his share of storms, but this time around he did it with a little faith, a lot of humor, and a band of brothers at his side.
Most of the men who volunteered to help repair Barney's home lost their own to Ike. Next week, they will be back to finish up before moving on to the next home.
A sign-up sheet has been setup at Sullivan's Pharamacy in Bacliff to assist elderly residents with repairs.
The group is also looking for anyone who would like to volunteer. For more information visit www.sanleontexas.com.
