HOUSTON—A 7-month-old girl died Friday after police say, her grandfather forgot her in a car outside a southeast Houston school.

A crowd gathered outside the Rucker Elementary School parking lot, located in the 5200 block of Vinett, as the medical examiner took pictures and investigators took temperature readings inside the car.

“I just don’t see how you can leave a baby in a vehicle whether it’s 1 month old or 8 years old. It’s unreal,” Gena Salazar said.

Police say the child was left unattended in a Ford Taurus station wagon for five hours.

It was during his lunch break that the baby’s grandfather, a social worker at the school, realized his granddaughter had ridden to work with him. That’s because it was his turn to drop her off at day care. According to police, the man shared the duty with his daughter.

The baby was found still in the car seat, covered with a blanket because it was cold this morning.

Her grandfather says he forgot it was his turn to drop her off.

Police say the man was late to work and rushed inside. 

The child was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Similar incidents have occurred four other times in Harris County this summer. And each time, the same story.

This was the car that the baby was found in.

A parent or grandparent, in a hurry or out of their normal routine, somehow forgot about the child.

“I think they should get what they deserve. The child didn’t deserve to be left in the car. Can’t breath, can’t eat. I think they deserve to be locked up,” Delia Munoz said.

The case will be referred to the grand jury.
