Houston Mayor Bill White sounds off on Ike
05:57 PM CDT on Friday, October 3, 2008
HOUSTON—Houston Mayor Bill White sat down with 11 News Friday and talked about the city’s disaster plan, detailing what worked and what didn’t.
White credits volunteers with helping Houston get back on its feet quickly.
But not everything went so well. The usually calm Mayor White was visibly angry at times during the post-storm chaos. At one point, he even used salty language when he felt FEMA ice trucks were moving too slow.
White asked the feds to let the city have more say in getting food, water and ice to the citizens.
“You know, we have a lot of capabilities in this community, in the public and private sector. What we want others to do is basically pay the bills for emergency relief,” White said.
So far, that hasn’t happened.
“Unless there’s a wire transfer in the bank that we can draw on, I am not going to be complacent or satisfied,” White said.
The cleanup effort is going to costs billions along the Gulf Coast.
White said while the city is willing to wait a little while longer for federal funds, help for people can’t come soon enough. So far, the help for the people seems to be working.
11 News checked one FEMA help center and found only a handful of people waiting for assistance.
As for the city and the mayor, they can only wait and see how much aid will actually come their way.
