Hurricane victim's body found in Chambers Co. debris field
04:58 PM CDT on Thursday, September 25, 2008
BOLIVAR PENINSULA — Rescue workers found the body of a middle-aged woman who may have been from Bolivar Peninsula in a Chambers County debris field.
The woman’s body was found Tuesday afternoon.
She was described as white, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, and in her late 40s or 50s. She had short brown hair with blonde or gray highlights.
She was wearing only a bra, had dental work, including fillings and caps, and had a scar from a hysterectomy.
Preliminary autopsy reports indicate she drowned.
Her body was found in a field east of FM 562 between Loan Oak Bayou and Lake Surprise, north of the Moody Wildlife Refuge.
Chambers County Sheriff’s Office investigators said the woman might have been in Gilchrist during Hurricane Ike, because much of what was on Bolivar Peninsula washed up 5 or 6 miles inland.
There are 44 major debris piles in Chambers County and sorting through all of them could take weeks. Investigators are continuing to search the piles with tracking dogs.
Those who can help identify the woman should call the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office at 409-267-8318.
